Mick Dawson

Ruth Copland interviews Mick Dawson, world-record holder, film-maker, Royal Marines Commando, sailor, defender of ships from Somali pirates, and motivational speaker. Having served in the Falklands War at seventeen and in the Middle East Mick followed his military career by pursuing his passion for the ocean and gained a world record with Chris Martin for being the first and only people to successfully row 7,000 miles across the North Pacific to San Francisco. We talk about Mick Dawson’s life of adventure; why he pushes himself to break boundaries; the experiences that led to the epic North Pacific row; his brush with death; his documentary film about 189 days at sea ‘Rowing the Pacific’ produced with the Discovery Channel; what inspires him to keep stretching himself, and more. Mick Dawson is the author of the book Battling the Ocean in a Rowboat: Crossing the Atlantic and North Pacific on Oars and Grit (US version), Rowing the Pacific: 7,000 Miles from Japan to San Francisco (UK Version) published in 2017.

Following his military career Mick Dawson became a professional sailor skippering luxury yachts across the globe. Simultaneously he was looking for exciting challenges. These have taken the form of epic rows across the world’s greatest oceans. He has rowed the Atlantic and is the world record holder with Chris Martin for rowing the North Pacific. Armed with his camera Mick filmed the whole endeavour and Discovery Channel subsequently produced a hugely popular documentary of this epic voyage, ‘Rowing the Pacific,’ which has aired on Discovery Europe, UK, and Asia with plans to be aired in the US on Discovery USA. “It’s A Question of Balance ®  so rare among radio talk shows, lets its subjects breathe. With her discursive style and pleasingly eccentric range of curiosity, host Ruth Copland each week treats her listeners to two hours of Whole Brain Radio.”
