Out and About – Conversations about Questions That Matter: Is Medicine an Art or a Science? | Special Guest Victoria Sweet
Technological advances are impressive and often life-saving but have we thrown the baby out with the bathwater in terms of jettisoning centuries old methods of nurturing and understanding the body? Does medicine have to be science first with the art of healthcare coming up in second place as an optional but nice add-on? Or would medicine be more powerful with a combination of art and science? In our rush to understand and successfully treat the body as a machine, are we ignoring the body, mind, and spirit as a work of art and handicapping our ability to heal in the process? Or is technology alone really our best bet to treat illness? Ruth Copland discusses these questions and also the new book ‘Slow Medicine: The Way To Healing’ with her special guest veteran physician, award-winning author, Professor of Medicine, and wonderful storyteller Victoria Sweet.
If you enjoy the interview meet Victoria Sweet in person at Bookshop Santa Cruz on October 23rd at 7PM.

Victoria Sweet is associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco; a prizewinning historian with a Ph.D. in history and social medicine; the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship; and a physician for over 20 years at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, where she began writing. In her first highly acclaimed book ‘God’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine’, she laid out her evidence—in stories of her patients and her hospital—for some radically new ideas about medicine and healthcare in the USA. Vanity Fair states that Victoria provides “an inspiring alternative vision of caring for the sick”. In her new book ‘Slow Medicine: The Way to Healing’, Victoria Sweet expands and builds on those ideas and stories delving into the essence of medicine.
In Out And About we consider topics with local relevance and global significance. The idea is to get us thinking about the questions that affect us all – to stimulate new thinking, or clarify what we already feel. To hear how other people’s opinions may differ from or be similar to our own.
“It’s A Question of Balance ® so rare among radio talk shows, lets its subjects breathe. With her discursive style and pleasingly eccentric range of curiosity, host Ruth Copland each week treats her listeners to two hours of Whole Brain Radio.”
